What is the Respite Shelter Project?
Until April 30, a 15-space trailer is set up on the vacant lot along Notre-Dame Street East, at the intersection with Davidson Street. This shelter is open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, and provides a place of respite and support for people experiencing homelessness who are staying in the vicinity.
What is the goal of the project?
The main goal is to provide a safe and supervised space for people forced to live on the Notre-Dame vacant lot because they cannot find a better housing solution. The shelter helps meet certain basic needs and offers a space that provides psychosocial support.
Will there be staff on site?
L’Anonyme ensures that there are always three staff members on board the respite shelter. We therefore maintain a 24-hour on-site presence.
Why do you provide Adirondack chairs instead of beds?
The respite shelter is not a lodging or housing service. It is an emergency and temporary response that allows us to provide a safe space for people to take a short break. If visitors to our respite center want to use the Adirondack chairs to sleep, they are welcome to do so, but the goal of the project is not to provide a place to sleep. The space inside the trailer does not allow for the installation of beds.
What is available inside the trailer?
Inside the trailer, we provide a welcoming and safe space, chairs, restrooms, basic emergency food supplies (water, snacks, soups, and hot drinks, etc.), survival supplies (clothing, sleeping bags, hand and foot warmers, emergency blankets, etc.), and a room for more in-depth interventions.
The trailer can accommodate up to 15 people at a time.
Why was this project launched?
With the significant rise in homelessness over the past few years, emergency shelter services are overwhelmed and can no longer meet the demand. We know that many people are forced to sleep outdoors because they have no better option. Since a significant number of these people are settling on the Notre-Dame vacant lot, a respite center was established to ensure their survival and increase their safety.
Is substance use permitted?
The consumption of alcohol or psychoactive substances is not permitted inside the respite shelter.
Are pets allowed inside the respite shelter?
Yes. Pets must not disturb the peace and quiet of the facility, and our staff reserve the right to deny them access if any problems arise.
Do you accept donations?
Due to logistical, storage, and staffing constraints, we do not currently accept material donations. If you would like to support our organization, we invite you to make a monetary donation at this address: https://anonyme.ca/dons/
Is it possible to volunteer?
There are no volunteer opportunities inside the shelter. L’Anonyme maintains a continuous presence with three staff members on site 24 hours a day, and volunteering is not possible due to space and training constraints.
